Currently packing up my life again as I get ready to head to Canada tomorrow for the Start of my World Cup Ski Cross (Ski X) quest.
It’s been a bit of a shocker to have to move the couple hundred kilos of baggage my coach and I have with us for the season out of our Saalfelden apartment. We were settled here, it’s a great location and the owners- absolutely lovely! I thoroughly recommend anyone coming to this area to stay here… a complete bargain and great scenery. I wish I could have stayed longer.
The unfortunate fact is, I can’t. As reasonable as the rent is, I am just too strapped for cash. My budget seemingly even worse than I had calculated, we have to give up our Austrian home from home and face our living situation on our return from across the pond.
It has been 2 years since I was last skiing in Canada. At that point I was preparing for the World Cup Downhills in Lake Louise together with my good friend and team mate- Chemmy Alcott. How things have changed for her too. Arriving over there tomorrow means I get to watch the same awesome race from the finish area this time. Instead of Lake Louise for my first World Cup of the year, I’m heading to Nakiska for the Ski Cross season opener and I couldn’t be more excited about it.
Not really knowing what to expect, I am a mix of emotions. All positive. With my Ski X journey so far being a massive learning curve, step by step I am doing what I need to do, being where I need to be. It would be stupid and naïve for me to go into this first race gunning for a win. Of course that is the goal ultimately, but being smart, I’m going to learn as much as I can, soaking up the atmosphere, the course and most of all, the competition, climbing my way up the rankings and when I am ready… smash some amazing results out. Simples!
After qualifying in 3rd in my first race of the season on sat, I am psyched with the progress I’m making. I even had my first big crash. Happy to walk away with only a slightly misbehaving knee and some sweet bruising, I can’t wait for the next races…
Next stop- Banff, Canada
